Excerpts from my new book - Introduction by Sue Courtney

Introduction

There has probably never been a time in history when help and advice was needed more in order to successfully be promoted, get a first job or succeed in business. Life is moving ever faster and it is more vital than ever to have that little bit of extra information that will nudge you ahead of the competition and improve your chances of success.

Over the last 10 years or so there has been a proliferation of coaches, all niching in different areas and all promising they have the answer to your problem - they can stop your pain and make life perfect.

Equally, there are a growing number of stylists on the scene, all promising to make you look wonderful so your life will instantly be perfect too.

Rubbish!

In your dreams.

I spent years watching programmes like “Ten Years Younger”, “How to Look Good Naked” and the programme pioneers – Trinny & Susannah with their offerings. Even Joan Collins had a go! True, the people featured did look wonderful (mostly) by the end of the programme but the transformation rarely lasted more than a few weeks – or months at most. When the programme revisited them they had always regressed back to something of their former ‘style’.

It must have been so very frustrating for the programme makers, the stylists and the people being styled. It happened time and again and still the format didn’t change.

I grew increasingly frustrated and eventually stopped watching the programmes altogether. The solution was obvious to me and I emailed some of the shows to give them the benefit of my thoughts – which were ignored. My approach probably wouldn’t make for such exciting viewing – and it is viewing figures that count, after all.

People do need help to see through the hype and the trends to what is actually going to make them look good. It all depends on your body shape and colouring – and also on your lifestyle and job, career or business. It is absolutely no use following trends if you want to be successful or if you want to look your best at all times. I sometimes think (no I think this most of the time) that designers and manufacturers are having a laugh at our expense when I see some of the styles they ‘sell’ us as the latest ‘must-haves’ each season. And we are stupid enough to buy them! Yes – I include myself in this. I have bought clothes – and worn them – knowing that they didn’t suit me. Do you know, even though I know the rules, I sometimes still buy something I know won’t work, just because I like it – and I always regret it. I’m not immune to mistakes.

This results in people dressing inappropriately for work and so, very often, being less successful than their better dressed colleagues – even if they can do the job better. In the current economic climate this is madness –nothing short of career suicide, in my opinion.

At the other end of the scale – and no less catastrophic – people are being hired because they look the part and talk the part but actually have no understanding of the job and so fail. Their attitude is wrong and their approach misguided. There has to be a better, more authentic way to approach the topic of Personal Rebranding.

In these days of economic turmoil, when jobs are disappearing in every sector and there is more competition than ever for every job, it makes sense to have as many cards as possible stacked in your favour. To know that the job or promotion that you are applying for is right for you at this moment in time, that you believe, without any doubt, that you can do the job and that you are right for the job and also know how to go about ensuring you stand out from the competition for all the right reasons.

I know that most people HAVE to work to pay bills and provide a roof over their heads. Some are fortunate enough to be able to work to provide those lovely little extras and luxuries that make life so much more fun. But wouldn’t it be great if you were so sought after that you could do both in a job you love and know that you could go anywhere and be welcomed with open arms because you are so well thought of?

It can be like that – even in a downturn. But only if you subscribe to the belief that success can be achieved by doing what Dan Bradbury advises (I believe it is a quote from Walt Disney)

“Observe the masses – and do the opposite.”

It is a principle adopted by all the most successful people throughout history – imagine where Steve Jobs would have been if he had done the same as everyone else!

So – to be the success you can undoubtedly be – do just that. Work out what you and everyone else are doing that isn’t really working and then change – do what successful people are doing and turn your life around.

Let Values Be Your Guide by Sue Courtney

“What a caterpillar sees as the end of the world, the master sees as a butterfly” Richard Bach

The future isn’t something that just happens, by default. You create it by the thoughts you allow and by the actions you take or neglect to take. Your future is in your hands – make of it what you will. If you are seeking career success then you need to read this.

Life is always presenting us with new opportunities. Sometimes we simply don’t notice them because they  come dressed up in work clothes and don’t appear very inviting. Big mistake.  Firstly, remember that the mind – like a parachute – works best when open. Try to remain open to new possibilities and opportunities that come your way. So let go of any preconceived ideas, get out of your own way and allow the process to work.

If you aren’t experiencing the career success you would like and you feel your life needs some fine tuning, the place to start is with your core values. Now it is time to establish exactly what your core values are. Consider first the values that seem to be present, on the surface at least, in today’s society : negativity, closed-mindedness, depression, fear, anxiety, worry, cruelty, hatred, meanness, separation, dishonesty and hopelessness. They are not a very uplifting set of values and reflect a fearful and in some ways damaged mindset. There is another way, which is more uplifting and brings happiness and joy.

Your core values are your true essence – the authentic, inner you. If you are true to your core values then your life will feel more whole and complete and you will be happy.  At our core we are positive and loving – negative values are conditioned into us by negative news and events. We have a choice as to whether we allow life to affect us in this way or whether we will stay true to our core values and remain positive and loving. Everyone has a different set of values that they feel are vital to their wellbeing but they all have a common thread – they make your life more meaningful and fulfilling. In order to chart a meaningful path through life’s uncertainties it is vital to be clear about exactly what your values are.

Select ten of the most important values from the list below. If you wish to add more, feel free. You are excavating the very essence of your being so be sure to list everything that is significant in your life.

Love                               Security                              Health                              Happiness

Financial wealth           Adventure                           Travel                               Honesty

Power                            Passion                               Integrity                           Success

Freedom                       Understanding                    Compassion                   Trust

Loyalty                          Creativity                             Respect                           Achievement

Acceptance                  Humour                               Kindness                         Independence

Excitement                   Intimacy                              Career/work                    Ambition

Contribution                 Sincerity                              Challenge                        Variety

Conservation               Fun                                       Family

Now that you have a list of the most important values in your life, you need to number them in priority order and maybe group some together, if that feels right for you. You now have a personal list that you can use to inform your goal setting and provide a set of principles to inform your decision making. If you think compiling the list of your core values and prioritising them was tough – living your life to their standards is the big test. Remember, this is your personal list – if you find it isn’t quite right, you can always change it. It has to be absolutely right for you and reflect the truth of who you really are.

Armed with a list of your core values it is often easier to make decisions that affect how you live your life and how you plan for your future. As you begin to apply your values to all aspects of your life you may find some conflict. It may be that you work in a factory that produces disposable cups and Conservation is an important value to you. There is conflict as you need to earn a living but are working against one of your principles. Consider ways to bring harmony such as seeking employment in a company that manufactures something more in keeping with your values or maybe talk to the management about offsetting the impact the cups have by planting trees or making them from a more environmentally friendly material. You see how knowing your values can begin to explain why some areas of your life are causing internal conflict and can give you the knowledge needed to make changes that will bring your values and life into harmony.

If you are seeking a promotion that you know will take you away from home more or require you to work longer hours, and one of your core values is Family, then you may be self sabotaging in order to stay true to your values. A good coach (ME?) can help you to work through any such conflicts to enable a harmonious resolution.

One of my core values turned out to be security. Knowing this enabled me to understand why aspects of my life were causing me stress and develop a plan to overcome the issue and restore the security I need in my life.

Equipped with this knowledge you can now look at all aspects of your life and find answers to your questions about how to bring more happiness and harmony into each aspect. Simply relate your values to each aspect of your life and give them a rating. On a scale of 1 to 10, how well is each value represented in your relationships, finances, career and other important aspects of your life. Be absolutely honest with yourself even if the truth is a little uncomfortable or inconvenient.

If, knowing your values, you are still finding it difficult to embrace change because of fear, I have a little game that may help. If you are afraid of an outcome or set of events, ask yourself

“What is the worst that could possibly happen under the circumstances?” List all your ideas. Just getting them out into the open can help you to see how very unlikely they are to happen. Then ask yourself

“What would you do if the worst happened?” You would cope and having thought of some strategies can take away some of the fear. List all your possible solutions next to each challenge. Do the solutions fit with your core values? What reaction to the circumstances would fit with your values? What actions would you take if you were to be true to your values?

Now ask yourself

“What is the very best that could possibly happen as a result of taking this action?” Again, list every possibility you can think of, however unlikely or convoluted it may seem. Suspend disbelief. Then ask

“How could you make that wonderful circumstance happen?” List all the possible actions that you could take, in line with your values, that could lead to the best possible scenario and pick one to try first.

With your values to guide you, anything is possible. It is time to let the real, authentic you out. When challenges arise it is Life nudging you to find a better way and let go of what isn’t working, however comfortable its familiarity may be. Release the old to make room for the new.

Golden Rules for Getting Ahead by Sue Courtney

I have been proactively working on a set of Golden Rules that, if you conscientiously apply them, will increase your chances of being offered that job of your dreams or that much sought-after promotion. They are the result of personal experience and research and I offer them to you in the hope that they enable you to achieve your desired results.

Basically, for career success, all you need to do is Stand Out From The Crowd.

It is that simple – but not necessarily easy. You need to be totally committed to achieving your career goal and willing to ‘go the extra mile’ in order to be noticed. That having been said, in my experience it doesn’t take a massive amount of extra effort to get noticed.

Read on and I will explain my five rules to enable you to  Stand Out From The Crowd for career success.

Rule#1 Look the part.

I know I repeat this often – but only because it is vitally important. The first impression people make of you will be visual. If you dress the same as all the others doing your job you will just blend in to the background – and that is not a good thing. Your aim is to be noticed. Your aim is also to be associated in the minds of management as a promotion prospect as soon as they see you each day. My Wardrobe De-Tox sessions are perfect for this. Go to www.successandimagecoach.co.uk/wardrobe-de-tox/

I remember when I was a supply teac her some years ago. I had been teaching for a few consecutive days and had arrived at work quite early. As I strode purposefully into school I passed a parent of a child from another class who asked me if I was the new head teacher. I explained that I was, in fact, a supply teacher based mainly in year one. She apologised for her  mistake but explained that she had assumed this because I looked so “invincible”! I always dressed smartly in suit or dress and jacket rather than the more casual attire of the permanent staff and so I looked as if I should have been in charge. I had to smile.

Rule #2 Arrive early and leave late.

Try to arrive earlier than the managers several times each week and be sure they realise you have beaten them in – there is no point in arriving early and putting in extra time if nobody notices. And don’t waste your time while you are there – be productive and proactive, getting little and big jobs done, getting organised for the day and looking useful.

Don’t clock watch. Finish off the job you are doing before you even consider leaving and then see if there is something else you could usefully do that would make the following day a little easier – for yourself or a colleague.

Rule #3  Look for ways to add value and help out.

Offer to take on a task to help a colleague out. Make suggestions that might make a task more efficient or quicker to complete.

Spread the love – help others whenever you can, whatever their role in the company. Could you do some small thing to make the cleaner’s job a little quicker, easier or more pleasant? Do you know what interests the top manager so you could pop an article on the subject on his/her desk occasionally?

Rule #4  Be cheerful and upbeat

That means no moaning and no gossiping. Look for the good in all people and situations – no matter what there will always be something.

Greet everyone with a smile and a cheery “hello” even if you aren’t feeling cheery. You will be surprised how something this small can change the mood of a section.

Being relentlessly cheerful and positive is a habit that can really make a difference – try it for yourself and see.

Rule #5  Volunteer

Put yourself forward for courses that will enable you to add more value to the company and do your job better – actually ask to be included on them, explaining that it would enable you to do a better job for the company. Constantly upgrade your skills so you can offer more to the company than you currently do – even if it has to be done in your own time and at your own expense, look on it as an investment. If you are serious about getting ahead it will be worth it as you will recoup the expense many times over when you are paid more. I offer seminars and courses based on my unique 3 step MAP system – go to www.successandimagecoach.co.uk for details or email me at sue@successandimagecoach.co.uk to ask about seminars and courses coming up in the next few months.

GET NOTICED as an exemplary employee. If your colleagues are unhappy about your behaviour – well done, you must be doing something right. It shows you are worrying them because you are making them aware of what they should be doing and aren’t. Redouble your efforts and keep striving for your goal. Remember that successful people do what others won’t.

The underlying truth of the matter is this – if you are willing to do more than you are currently paid to do, you will eventually be paid to do more than you currently do.

It really does work – I have proved it and so have many of my clients over the years. So get out there and do your thing with style. And please let me know how you get on.

Get Your Act Together

So your goal for this year is to be promoted?

Why? What are the benefits to you?

What are you doing about it?

Are you perceived as promotion material by those with the power to grant your wish? And, more importantly, do they know that you would like a promotion? Have you made this point clear?

Let us begin at the beginning and take a logical approach to the achievement of your goal.

1.     Do you know exactly which promotion you want and exactly what it will mean to your life? What changes can you expect to experience – from the extra hours you may be expected to work, extra travelling to the new responsibilities. Are you certain that you have the necessary skills for the role – and the necessary self belief?

Do your research. Find out exactly what the promotion will require of you and begin to adopt those behaviours NOW, in advance of even mentioning your wish for a promotion or applying for the role.

Acquire the new skills you will need and be sure that you are noticed as you change your behaviours to that of the successful employee who is an asset to the company

2.     What do you expect to gain from the promotion? Are you also clear on what you would be expected to give? Does it seem to be a fair trade-off to you? Are you ready to give all that will be expected and more to be the model employee?

Check in with your values to be sure that the extra money or your own office are adequate compensation for the extra time and effort that will doubtless be required of you. Talk to someone who already holds the role – maybe in a different company – to find out the reality of the role. If possible, take a day to shadow them – that ‘try-before-you-buy’ strategy that is so important.

3.     Change your behaviours to match those of the person you wish to be. Change the way you present yourself – the way you dress, the time you arrive for work and the time you leave, the people you associate with at work – ditch the moaning brigade.

If you aren’t comfortable associating with more senior people or more focused colleagues then you probably aren’t ready for the new role. They say that you are as successful as the people whose company you keep. Negative people and moaners won’t help you get to the top. If you have to change your friends to achieve success – are you prepared to do it?

4.     Be prepared to use your own time and money to gain qualifications, attend courses and network. If you really want the success you will find a way to achieve it – but you have to be determined and single minded.

What new skills do you need to acquire and where can you go to acquire them? Again, do your research. There are many online courses and webinars as well as evening classes and weekend retreats and conferences. Do what most of the others won’t do and commit to ongoing learning and constant improvement.

5.     Once you are behaving as the person who has the job you want and looking the part you can begin to make your promotion intentions clear to the ‘powers that be’.

Be seen demonstrating your new behaviours and new dress code. Go out of your way to add value to the company and ensure you are noticed for this by those who have the power to recommend you. Ignore those who have a vested interest in keeping you down. This could be your biggest challenge.

Then actually tell people that you have gained new qualifications and that you are ambitious and want to be promoted. They aren’t mind-readers. Become the person who is looked to for excellence and develop a unique niche within the job – something that you are known for and for which your expertise is sought.

Stand out from the crowd for career success – by rebranding yourself as the success you want to be.

What do you need to do now? Only you can answer that question. But my purpose, with my unique MAP system, is to give you that competitive edge that will set you above your competition in the mind of your employer. So check out my website at www.successandimagecoach.co.uk or email me at sue@successandimagecoach.co.uk to let me know what you need from me.

Would YOU Employ you?

Seriously – would you employ you?

Is your brand strong and professional?

If you want to be considered a serious contender for promotion or a new job you need to be certain that your ‘brand’ conveys the right message and the people who need to know this actually get the message – loud and clear.

So where can you begin in your assessment of your potential promotability? (I may have made up a new word there). By asking yourself a few searching questions and giving yourself honest answers, that’s where. If you want to get ahead then you need to devote time and effort to cultivate the impression of being the person the company want to nurture and promote because they perceive they need you.

It isn’t enough to know that you are doing a great job, putting in extra hours and being a wonderful role model if nobody notices. So you need to develop a plan to ensure that over the next few months you bring the attention of everyone to your full potential for career development within the company. Of course, if your answers to the following questions demonstrate you actually aren’t currently promotiable (another new word!) then there is even m ore work to do.

Let us begin.

·         Right now, in your current position, do you stand out (preferably for the right reasons) or do you blend in with the masses? Guess which one you need to be considered a serious contender for promotion? Yes, you need to stand out as being exceptional. You also need to look like a promotion prospect, which means dressing for the role to which you aspire, not the same as everyone else. My Wardrobe De-Tox sessions (http://www.successandimagecoach.co.uk/wardrobe-de-tox/http://www.successandimagecoach.co.uk/wardrobe-de-tox/) are exactly what you need to address this issue. The matter is also covered in my Exclusive, Intensive MAP Weekends and also my weekend MAP seminars.

·         How do you show up for work? Are you early, on time or late on most days? Are you seen as enthusiastic and upbeat or are you one of the moaners at the water fountain? Are you organised or inefficient in your use of time? Does your employer get value for money from you or do you waste a lot of valuable work time? Do you care about the company or is it just a job?

·         Do you have a vision of where you want to be in the company in one, five or ten years from now and do you spend time, money and effort learning new skills that would enhance your value to the company? Is your employer aware of this? My Exclusive, Intensive MAP Weekends and my weekend MAP seminars devote a session to considering skills that may be necessary for career progression.

·         Do you have a written plan for how you propose to add value to the company? Does your employer know about it? Are you proactive or do you just turn up and do what you are told, without any thought of your own?

·         Do you know anything about your employers, outside work? Do they know anything about you? These days, building meaningful relationships is important. You need to know what is important to your employer and they need to know what is important to you. Of course, to be really effective – first, YOU need to know what is important to you. Again, time is given to this in my Exclusive, Intensive MAP Weekends and my weekend MAP seminars (email me at sue@successandimagecoach.co.uk for details of the next event).

So now you have a brief outline of some questions you might ask yourself to ascertain whether you are currently displaying the necessary professional ‘brand’ that will make applying for promotion a formality.

What do you need to do now? Only you can answer that question. But my purpose is to give you that competitive edge that will set you above your competition in the mind of your employer. So check out my website at www.successandimagecoach.co.uk or email me at sue@successandimagecoach.co.uk to let me know what you need from me.

The full version of this article will be published exclusively for Silver and Gold Support Programme members. Email me at sue@successandimagecoach.co.uk for details of the programmes.

What Temperature is Your Thermostat Set To? Part 1

What Temperature is Your Thermostat Set To? Part 1 By Sue Courtney

You know how everyone likes the ambient room temperature set slightly differently? It is something I often come across in meetings and in families. When I was married I was always trying to sneak the thermostat up a bit, my husband preferred it lower (though I suspect this was more to do with cost than temperature). In meetings I often come across one person who needs the heating up full to feel comfortable sitting next to another who really needs the air conditioning on full. All very challenging.

But not as challenging as financial thermostat settings.

Are you aware of where your financial thermostat is set?

Are you aware where this originated?

Whose story are you perpetuating?

Are you aware of the impact this is having on your life and your success?

Most people will answer no to all of the above. Well, if you aren’t achieving the success you want and deserve, or find it difficult to hold on to money and success you need to know the answers –  I mean, you really need to know the answers!

I have been familiar with the concept of financial thermostats for some time and have had success with exercises that aim to raise them. However, this seldom lasts long if you aren’t aware of the origin of your present setting and how it impacts your level of financial success.

If you want things to change, read on.

Your lack of financial and career success is, in some measure, a result of where your financial thermostat is set. However, just turning the setting to ‘high’ isn’t the answer.

Imagine that you are sitting in a room that feels a little cold to you, so you turn up the thermostat and the room begins to heat up. Bliss. However, you failed to notice that all the windows are open and it is freezing outside.

·         Will the temperature rise as much as you would like?

·         Will the temperature stay as high as you would like in the face of the freezing cold air coming in from outside?

I think we can agree that it won’t. No matter how long you keep the thermostat turned up high, if the windows stay open the temperature will rise to your desired setting (with a struggle) but then gradually cool when the heating switches off. The only permanent way to ensure the room stays at the temperature you set is to close the windows!

And so it is with your finances and your career success. You may feel that you have your thermostat set at the temperature you want, but if your ‘windows are open’ – that is you are unconsciously living with beliefs that come from elsewhere and are not supporting you – you are unlikely to maintain your career and financial success long term.

So what are the beliefs holding you back from achieving your full potential?

You may be surprised – I was when I discovered my own truth about this.
I realised that I had spent my life living my mother’s ‘truth’ about money and wealth. But the most shocking part of this was that her beliefs had been formed during a family trauma when she was a small child – about 5 years old. I had spent my entire life living the results of an event that took place about thirty years before I was born and were obviously not relevant to me and my life – and never had been. This realisation was very powerful and I admit I did shed tears – of amazement and relief.

Now I know that my mother didn’t mean to affect my life and financial success in any way and would have been thrilled beyond measure if I had become one of the very rich people she claimed to despise. But, because of all I had been exposed to throughout my life I found myself ‘getting rid of’ any success and money that I didn’t feel I had worked hard for – and why? Because, in my subconscious mind, I didn’t want my mother to despise me for being rich. I also maintained a lifestyle that kept me more or less broke, so when I earned a lot of money my expenses grew to ensure it was all spent!

It took me many years to work this out and ‘close my window’. It all makes so much sense now – all the wasted extravagances, the unsuccessful ‘investments’ – all to ensure I stayed true to someone else’s beliefs. Now I can maintain any financial  temperature I choose, which feels so good.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Are you living the results of family beliefs around money and success? Were you brought up with the notion of ‘we are the workers’, ‘we aren’t management material’ or other negative beliefs around people who are successful in their career, life and finances?

Well, the good news is that it is possible to change this – to ‘close your windows’ – and turn your life around.

First you need to think the way successful people, who already have the career, lifestyle and financial success you desire.

In part 2, I will show you how.

Groundhog Life - 7 Top Tips To Transform It

Is your life becoming somewhat repetitive – do the same issues and challenges keep cropping up, over and over? Are you having the same negative conversations and getting the same negative feelings at work every day?

We all experience this at some time, but when it feels as if it is all the time it may indicate that now may be the right time to take stock and do something about it. It is possible to set yourself free from the ‘groundhog life’ – here are my top 7 tips to turn your life around.

1.      The first step is to actually recognise it. Life will keep giving us the same lessons, often in different guises, until we learn the lessons and can move on. So first you need to become aware of the scripts you are repeating, which aren’t serving to increase your happiness and wellbeing. The sooner you do this the better. So have a look at your life and discover the negative scripts you are running, both at home and at work.

2.      Write down the negative scripts that you keep repeating to yourself. Maybe you aren’t happy at work, you have applied for promotions and been unsuccessful and have begun running scripts around “I’ll never get ahead”, “people like me don’t get promotion”, “I’m just not good enough”. Write them all out so you can actually see them. Getting them out in the open and accepting that this is what you are telling yourself is often enough to bring about changes. Take a few weeks to write them all down as you think of them, along with the way the script makes you feel and any associated thoughts and feelings that come up.

3.      Now you need to develop a vision of how you want it to be. You need clarity on what you actually do want before you can move forward. When I work with ambitious, professional ladies I begin with a values exercise to enable them to find out what is important to them right now – what their purpose is. It’s no good making a change if it isn’t the right change. You need to know what you truly want and need in your life before you can decide how you want your life or work situation to be. Once you are clear on your values, write a detailed description of your ideal working day from waking up to going to sleep at the end of the day. Spend time adding to it and making changes until it feels perfect. This is your goal. You can now measure your current situation and progress against this ideal.

4.      Now return to your negative scripts and challenge them. If you are saying “people like me don’t get promotion” challenge this by asking “Where’s the evidence for this?” “Really?” “Never?” On a piece of paper, make two columns – one headed evidence in support and the other evidence against and begin to list all the evidence you can come up with. It probably won’t take long for you to realise that the evidence doesn’t stack up in support of your negative belief.

5.      If you find the evidence does support your negative scripts then ask “what can I do about it?” This will open your mind to possibilities – write them down – all of them, however wacky. You don’t censor the ideas at this stage. By now you should be beginning to believe that you do have choices and options and what you want is possible – if you are prepared to make a few changes.

6.      The next step is to rewrite your negative scripts to make them more positive and supportive. So “people like me don’t get promotion” might become “There are three women who used to do my job and are now in senior management or on the board – if they can do it, so can I”. You are going to have to make a mindset shift for things to change. You might also ask them for tips on how best to gain promotion – I’m sure they will have many stories and will be very willing to share advice with anyone who really wants to listen and learn.

7.      Use your new, positive and empowering scripts to develop a plan of what you will do to make the changes happen. I have already suggested one action. I am sure there will be many more – practical action steps that will move you in the direction of your goal. My luxury, intensive seminars, webinar programmes and personalised programmes all address the issues that may arise with very practical steps to take to get ahead of your competition. How To Get To The Top Part 2 by Sue Courtney

Since it has been demonstrated that mixed gender departments produce more profits for companies, exactly what is stopping women getting to the top? And what can be done about it?

Succession planning in some companies is woefully inadequate. Grooming the most appropriate candidate for an up-coming position would, automatically include a number of women, so this is a place to start. It will work as long as women are encouraged and supported. So often they are not.

Too often the feedback I receive from women is that men often feel threatened by successful or ambitious women and so do what they can to hold them back. Disappointingly, the “old boy’s network” is alive and still thriving at the higher levels of many companies in this country.

In Norway businesses have benefitted from the implementation of a quota system. All companies are required to have women holding at least 40% of all boardroom positions. Richard Branson reports that the figure is now “an encouraging 44%”. However, this doesn’t translate into CEO status, where the figure is around 2%. This system brings a balance of experience and viewpoints and since the population is made up of both men and women it makes sense to have both equally represented at decision-making level in companies. This may soon become the law in the UK, as the EU is considering implementing it as law for the whole of Europe. Watch this space to see how it works.

Richard Branson also points out, in his article “Why We Need More Women in the Boardroom”, that since 70% of household purchasing decisions are made by women – from the brand of shampoo to the house, car and holiday– and since, often, 50% of the employees in a company are women, surely it makes sense to have them equally represented at the decision-making end of the company.

He goes on to suggest that companies might begin by considering the opportunities available for women to advance their career in the company – beginning with asking the female employees themselves for their experiences and advice. Such wise words.

However, this won’t address the most pressing reasons for the lack of female applicants for top jobs, which are

·         Lack of affordable childcare – the biggest issue for mothers wishing to return to work after birth.

·         Lack of shared parental leave after childbirth

·         Lack of long parental leave entitlement by fathers – mothers have long leave options, fathers are usually lucky if they have a couple of weeks.

·         The impact maternity leave can have on small companies.

·         The reluctance of some companies to promote women because they are unwilling to address the changes that this would require.

Not all companies can offer subsidised childcare for their staff, I accept that. But something has to be done to stem the loss of top talent in business.

Flexible working is an option. In the examples I have seen it rather looks and feels like being a small business owner, working from home. It allows employees to work out their own schedules and fit work round school runs and other meetings. This works as well for fathers as mothers and is something I read about many years ago, when it was seen as the future of business in the UK. Hmm. That prediction didn’t quite work out, did it?

There are many who are against quotas, preferring targets instead. There is currently a target to have 25% women board members by 2015, and certainly there is evidence that this would have a beneficial effect on society and business in the future.

So what are the answers?

As many and varied as there are companies I suspect.

I firmly believe that it has to be possible to “have it all”. That, if they so wish, women should be able to pursue a career, reach the top and also bring up a family – but it needs enormous determination on the part of both women and companies to achieve this.

However, I stress, “If they so wish”. Not every woman has to want to reach the top – any more than every man has to. It is time we got honest about what we really want, worked out what it will cost not just in financial terms, but also in terms of lifestyle, happiness and peace of mind. It should be as acceptable in the UK as it is in Norway, for men to stay at home and bring up the children – if that is their choice.

It also helps to have supportive family and to have the luxury of deciding when the right moment for career advancement is. It may be from the moment of birth or it may be once the children are older. Equally it may be to not have children at all. Again, no right answer – just a personal choice.

So, from my research, the main factors affecting the number of women reaching the top of their career ladder are

·         The attitude of the largely male-dominated upper echelons of major companies

·         The lack of affordable childcare

·         A lack of confidence in their ability to fulfil a role – especially if the job specification is worded in ‘male’ language

·         Women’s own doubt about the effort to reward ratio being worth the potential sacrifices.

My solutions?

·         Re-write job advertisements and job specifications to use more female friendly language. It would be great if companies would use more neutral language, but failing that, do it yourself and see the difference in your confidence.

·         Do the maths. Actually work out the financial benefits to pursuing your career against the cost of childcare. Then factor in your happiness, which is priceless. Do what feels right for you – otherwise you will be resentful, whichever choice you make.

·         Childcare not an issue? Great. Develop a plan – a detailed plan of all you will need to do, get a coach or mentor and get to work on achieving your goal. Be relentless in your pursuit of success – and be open to changing companies, sectors or career if that is what it takes.

I am able to provide a tailor made solution in the form of my unique 3 step MAP system for career success. This is available as
